Women's Social Sunday "Buying in H Mart" 32 miles/+1,900' (Lorraine)
Come with us on this special alimentary ride,
"Buying In H Mart"
(we'll actually be going to Kukje Market in Daly City.) We pay tribute to Michelle Zauner's book, Crying in H Mart, her coming of age memoir about growing up bi-cultural (half Korean and half Caucasian) in Eugene, Oregon, looking to her immigrant Korean mother as the cultural anchor yet rebelling against that very same asian heritage, then losing both her aunt and mother to cancer within a span of 5 years, grieving her loss while searching for
evidence that "the Korean half of [her] identity didn't die when they did",
and finding grounding, solace and belonging with her Korean identity in Korean dishes that she shared with her mother which she is able to buy at H Mart and later learns to cook for herself.
For our ride we will head over to Kukje Market in Daly City,
my preferred grocery store for Korean fare, for in my opinion it has the brashly seasoned and non-toned down versions of banchans, Korean side dishes. Let's sample for ourselves the taste of home, connection and remembrances the author confides to us in her memoir.
Meet at 9:45AM/Wheels Roll 10AM from Equator Coffees, 1201 Bridgeway, Sausalito CA.
Map
We'll take East Road and Conzelman to get to the bridge. Then 23rd Avenue, a quick stop by the Polo Fields bathrooms, 34th Avenue through the Sunset District to Lake Merced Blvd.
Bring your backpack
with you as you will want to load up on the Banchan at Kukje Market. Pack some utensils (fork, spoon or chopsticks) with you. Grab a drink. We'll ride over to the nearby Westlake Community Center picnic tables and savor our forage.
No long extended climbs but there are several 200' climbs. Not a beginner's ride. Please make sure you have the fitness to bike 35-40 miles distance comfortably. The combined climbs are 1,900 ft. Registration is required to attend the ride. Members and non-members please register.
