About this event
Photos from The Press Democrat, Santa Rosa "Wild Flour Bread Freestone a hit with locals, tourists alike" March 1st, 2020 (original posting)
Join us for a scrumptious west Sonoma County tour starting from Petaluma. We take Middle 2 Rock to Two Rock then ride to Bloomfield, Freestone, Valley Ford, Burnside Rd (3.2 miles/+807 ft/4.6% avg. gradient), Fallon and then head east back to Petaluma. Our midpoint snack stop after the Burnside Rd climb is the titular and famous Wild Flour Bread bakery in Freestone, known for its brick oven bread loaves, scones, sticky buns and quirky old school charm; they take cash only. This legendary bakery produces more than 1,000 items daily and only does in-store sales; no preorders or catering orders are accepted. At the day's end whatever doesn't get sold is donated to the local food pantries.
The photos above show master baker, Gianfranco, layering cinnamon and sugar over 8 lbs of butter on top of a currant studded dough sheet for the signature massive Sticky Buns before two people roll it up into a seriously large log, then cut it into rolls. On the right is long time baker, Krikit Morris, showing off a tray of the oooey gooey finished product.
Time: Meet 9:15AM/Roll 9:30AM
Start: Walnut Park, Petaluma Map (we'll meet on the E Street side near the restrooms. Water fountain in the back near the playground area)
