About this event
Remember Jim Jarmusch's 1984 cult classic film Stranger Than Paradise? On this Labor Day holiday and not unlike the central characters in the film we will embark on a chill mid morning romp to visit our own Paradise, in reverse, and unearth a few unlikely gems along the way. We'll take the little climb up Beach Road on Belvedere Island; photo op at the built in bench and the ruins, site of The Lava House, the demolished property of an eccentric owner, Jerry Ganz, who imported lava rocks from Hawaii at a considerable fortune to build the foundation. The house never went up; only the garage was completed. After 10 years of construction, litigation with the city of Belvedere, staunch neighborhood opposition and actual battles with the persistent and powerful seawater waves that hammered at the structure day and night the task of transforming lava rocks into a steady foundation proved too insurmountable for the owner and he finally gave up and left the contiguous 4 lot property abandoned for more than 30 years.
